Fasting before a blood test: how long, and what you can have

Medically reviewed by Dr. N. S. Santosh Varma, MBBS, FIM, FIDM, FICCM · Reg. APMC/FMR 112686 · Updated 5 Oct 2026

Quick answer

For a full body checkup, most labs ask you to fast for 10 to 12 hours, usually overnight, because the lipid profile and fasting sugar are affected by food. Plain water is allowed and encouraged. Avoid tea, coffee, juice, alcohol and smoking during the fast, and ask your doctor before skipping any regular medicine.

Which tests need fasting

TestFasting
Lipid profileUsually 10–12 hours
Fasting blood sugarUsually 8–12 hours
Liver functionAs advised by the lab
CBCUsually not needed on its own
Urine routineNot needed

When several tests are done together, follow the longest fasting rule. Our team confirms exact instructions when your home collection slot is booked.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drink water before a blood test?

Yes. Plain water is allowed during the fast and helps make sample collection easier.

Can I drink tea or coffee before a fasting blood test?

No. Even black tea or coffee can affect some results. Wait until after the sample is taken.

What happens if I eat before a lipid test?

Triglyceride values can come out higher than your true level. Tell the collector if you have eaten, so the test can be rescheduled or the result read accordingly.
