Urine routine test: what it checks and how to give the sample

Medically reviewed by Dr. N. S. Santosh Varma, MBBS, FIM, FIDM, FICCM · Reg. APMC/FMR 112686 · Updated 5 Oct 2026

Quick answer

A urine routine test (urinalysis) checks the colour, clarity and chemistry of your urine and looks at it under a microscope. It can show signs of urinary tract infection, kidney problems, high blood sugar and dehydration. It needs a clean, midstream urine sample, usually the first one in the morning. YIRA's checkup reports 20 urine values.

Understanding your report

Each value on your report is printed next to the lab's reference range. A value outside the range is marked high or low. One out-of-range value does not always mean a problem: results can change with recent illness, food, medicines or hydration. Your doctor reads the values together with your health history and may repeat the test or ask for more. Every YIRA plan includes a doctor consultation to go through your report.

Frequently asked questions

What is a midstream urine sample?

You pass the first few drops into the toilet and then collect the middle part of the urine stream in the sterile container. This reduces contamination from the skin.

What do pus cells in urine mean?

Pus cells are white blood cells. A raised count can be a sign of a urinary tract infection or inflammation. Your doctor reads it with your symptoms and other results.

Do I need to fast for a urine test?

No. Fasting is not needed for a urine routine test. If it is done with your blood tests, follow the fasting instructions for the blood tests.

Can a urine test be done at home?

Yes. In the YIRA checkup, our collector gives you a sterile container and takes the urine sample along with the blood sample at your home.
