How many hours of fasting for a lipid profile? Water, tea and gum

Medically reviewed by Dr. N. S. Santosh Varma, MBBS, FIM, FIDM, FICCM · Reg. APMC/FMR 112686 · Updated the day of publishing

Quick answer

Most labs ask for 10 to 12 hours of fasting before a lipid profile, so an overnight fast with an early-morning sample works best. Plain water is allowed and helps. Avoid tea, coffee, milk, juice, chewing gum and alcohol during the fast. Some doctors accept a non-fasting lipid test, so follow the instruction you are given.

What you can and cannot have

During the fastAllowed?
Plain waterYes
Tea or coffee (even without sugar)Better avoided
Milk, juice, soft drinksNo
Chewing gum, mintsBetter avoided
Regular medicinesUsually yes, unless your doctor says otherwise
Alcohol (the evening before)No

Why fasting matters

Triglycerides rise after a meal and stay up for several hours. Fasting gives a stable value and a more accurate calculated LDL cholesterol. Total and HDL cholesterol change much less with food.

Simple plan for a home collection

  • Light dinner by 8–9 pm
  • Only water after dinner
  • Sample collected at home early in the morning
  • Eat breakfast right after the sample
