SGPT (ALT) and SGOT (AST) are liver enzymes measured in a liver function test. SGPT is found mainly in the liver, so a high SGPT points more specifically to liver cell injury; SGOT is also found in the heart and muscles. Many labs report a normal range of roughly up to 40 U/L for each. Fasting is usually not needed for these two tests alone.
| Test | Full form | Also called | Found mainly in |
|---|---|---|---|
| SGPT | Serum Glutamic Pyruvic Transaminase | ALT (alanine aminotransferase) | Liver |
| SGOT | Serum Glutamic Oxaloacetic Transaminase | AST (aspartate aminotransferase) | Liver, heart, muscles |
| Result | What it may suggest |
|---|---|
| Both within the lab's range | No sign of liver cell injury on these markers |
| Mildly raised (under about 3 times the upper limit) | Fatty liver, alcohol, some medicines, recent heavy exercise |
| Much higher | Needs prompt medical review (for example hepatitis) |
Reference ranges differ slightly between labs, by age and by sex; always read the range printed on your own report and ask a doctor to interpret it.
Doctors sometimes look at the SGOT/SGPT (AST/ALT) ratio. A ratio above about 2 is often seen with alcohol-related liver disease, while in fatty liver SGPT is usually higher than SGOT. The ratio is a clue, not a diagnosis.
Yes. The liver function test (12 values, including SGPT, SGOT and their ratio) is part of the 70-test checkup in every YIRA Family Health Plan, with home sample collection and a doctor consultation to go through your report.
A YIRA Family Health Plan includes a 70-test full body checkup at home for one registered member, a doctor consultation for the family, a review of an elder's past reports, and dental and eye check-ups. Essential ₹999 a year (up to 4 family members registered); Complete ₹1,299 a year (up to 8, with ₹5 lakh accident cover for the buyer).

Essential ₹999 (one 70-test checkup, up to 4 family members registered) · Complete ₹1,299 (up to 8, with ₹5 lakh accident cover). Doctor consultation, dental and eye check-ups included. Pay after sample collection.
SGPT is more specific to the liver. SGOT can also rise from heart or muscle injury, so doctors read them together.
Usually not for these two alone. When done with a lipid profile, as in YIRA's checkup, labs ask for 10 to 12 hours of fasting.
Yes. Heavy exercise can raise SGOT for a few days because it is also found in muscles. Tell the doctor about recent intense workouts.
